- 6:28 PM - fayte's weekly news digest #1
Hm. I've decided to do my own weekly (but it won't be weekly) take on current events and other rubbish.
Where could I start? Well, what other than what everyone's been talking about for the past week? What is it: Windows Live Messenger of course! The name change is obviously to identify that the program is live rather than not live, which would be quite useless. Apart from that, Messenger is now orange (with a bit of red and green) and Microsoft have actually achieved the unachievable by making it even more tacky. I believe it's possible to download it, but I don't know where. I've used it. The only useful thing is the ability to send messages to offline people. Otherwise, it's a waste of time. Why, for the love of god, can't people use IRC? Sheesh.
Here's something that amused me: former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein walked out of court amid uproar within minutes of the resumption of his murder trial under a new presiding judge. Aren't there rules to stop this? I thought the whole point of court was to send people to jail (or their death, in this instance). Surely walking out is cheating the system. Someone really needs to take a look at this small loophole.
Sick bastard(s). 'Nuff said.
It seems Google are finally backing down against China. If you don't know, China actively filter out anything to do with Tibet from all incoming internet websites. So, if you have a website that could potentially retrieve information about Tibet, you're blocked. To get around this, Google are filtering out anything to do with Tibet themselves, so google.cn is unbanned by China. Firstly, the China internet laws are total cack. In fact, China is total cack. Who cares about China anyway? I don't. Tibet doesn't care about China. I bet that's humiliating. Anyway, I guess this has somewhat lowered my opinion of Google. They're still really cool, so don't worry. Oh, sorry, eXonyte, I mentioned Tibet, so I guess you won't be receiving any more Chinese visitors. Did we even have any?
In the latest shock announcement from Microsoft, Microsoft Office 12 will be named Office 2007. I'm starting to get bored with all these boring names. Why can't they use an interesting name, like Microsoft Office: Death of the Paperclip? I would buy it just out of spite. That paperclip drives me nuts. And practically the rest of the world's population. Nerf paperclip plz blizz!!!11
I guess that's it, really. Here's something cool: I have thought of a way of turning any file into less than 50 bytes (and back again). It's probably been thought of before. Problem is, you'd need an Intel Pluton Bazillionjillion (or the AMD equivalent) to do it. Otherwise, it works. I'll wait a few years and see if there's a big leap in processing power. Probably not, but I guess it's possible. You can probably guess the details, but if not, I'm not going to tell you. That's not really news, just something quite interesting. To sum up, it would theoretically be possible to turn 1 GB into less than 1 KB if you had a processor powerful enough. I've said enough.
Next week: ...how the hell would I know? If I did, I'd be making a lot of money right now ;)

- 9:59 PM - Don't go see Brokeback Mountain. Trust me.
So we're talking about going see a movie the other day. Someone suggests going see Brokeback Mountain. It sounds like a good idea at first. I saw the previews... it's an Ang Lee film about cowboys. Bound to be lots of cool, macho, manly cowboy stuff, right? WRONG!! Brokeback Mountain isn't about cowboys. It's about gay cowboys. That's different. Especially when they're gay cowboys who earned an R rating for sexual content and nudity. Luckily one of my other friends was informed.
So now you know. And knowing is half the battle.

- 2:00 PM - Whee!
Apparently someone used my Site5 Affiliate link to sign up for hosting. I'm not sure who it was (it doesn't tell me, which is probably good?) but if you happen to read this, you're the first person to do so. Thanks ^_^
- 3:39 AM - Ruby on Rails FTW.
Ruby on Rails kicks supreme ass. It's super leet awesome. I can do things in RoR in about 2 lines that takes me 20-30 in PHP. Scaffolding is the coolest thing ever. To have a crude editing interface, you need just this:
scaffold :whatever
Then, for that particular action, it'll create view/edit/delete/create forms for it. I mean. Simple. Elegant. Clean. I love it. :D
Anyway, I'm working on a new site design right now. It'll rule, and it'll be RoR. Hehe.

My apologies to anyone running lower than 1024x768 resolution.

Where did the hole come from?
- 8:53 PM - Riddle
3 men order a pizza. The pizza man comes and gives the men their pizza. He says the pizza totals to 30 dollars, so each man pays 10 dollars.
The pizza guy gets back to the store and finds out the pizza was only 25 dollars,
so he goes back to the house, gives back a dollar to each man and keeps a 2 dollar tip.
But where's the missing dollar?
3 * 10 = 30
30 - 5 = 25
3 * 9 = 27 + 2 = 29

- 6:45 PM - I'm feeling nice.
I'm giving away e-mail addresses for my domain, pwnz.me.uk, incase anyone needs a free/easy e-mail account. No bullshit, please. It's sort of like a trial - if I don't like it, I'll just close the account registration later.
Get one here.
Heads up to Ziggy for the hosting. You rock.
Update: I have been advised that the colouring of the page linked above may be harmful to small children. Therefore my only advice is to grab as many small children as you can find before you click the link. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Remember how I posted that Star Wars story on your old site? Well, I forgot that it was on the old one, so is there any way for you to get that and email it to me?

- 6:03 PM - Creative Can Lick My [bouncy object]s
I managed to buy a motherboard with shitty sound. I mean, one channel, half duplex, no DSP. Forgetting this, I got an awesome soundcard from a friend. A Sound Blaster Live! 7.1. The cream of the crop. Unfortunately, because they decided to make it have some proprietary things like AC3 / Dolby Digital audio, the sound chip on it.. well.. is not exactly an EMU10K1. Now, it is compatible with an EMU10K1 driver, but unfortunately for me... ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture) does not support capture on this device due to a lack of vendor support. Like, they're not helping them figure it out.
So, now, I gotta find a sound card that is full duplex and supports all of the crap I need it to support, AND the driver doesn't suck. Yay.
