- 10:36 PM - So I'm reinstalling CS:S

Along with Half Life 2, of course. I want to see how it runs now that I have twice the RAM I did when I first played it.

Granted, it didn't run bad before, but it'll hopefully load a lot faster.

I had forgotten how horribly slow Steam is though when it comes to re-downloading your games.

- 12:04 PM - Vista

I thought I'd talk a little bit about Vista. More specifically, about some of the worries that XP users may have about upgrading.

Drivers
I was pretty impressed with the compatability. My TV tuner card, USB microphone, wireless PCI card, and remote control IR reciever all work without any troubles. My printer, which is on a LAN, works fine as well(after setting it up manually). My 5.1 speakers work but unfortunately the 2 rear speakers don't make any sound outside of games.

UAC (a.k.a. Do you want to allow X to change settings?)
User Account Control has been slated in the media, especially in the Mac ads. I have to honestly say that as a daily user of Vista I honestly don't care about it, and it doesn't annoy me at all. In fact, I feel a bit safer knowing my computer is more secure because of it. Besides, Macs constantly ask for the administrator password when you're changing settings anyway, so those ads are pretty hypocritical anyway (but that's not the point).

Program Compatability
All the programs I used to use in XP work brilliantly in Vista. I've actually stopped using Firefox because IE7 has grown on me quite a bit, and also because to be honest I don't care about web standards any more. I'm also pretty pissed off with all the Firefox fanboys claiming that IE7 is trash, Firefox is god, certain sites using scripts to show a "Firefox is better than your browser" message, etc, etc, but that's also for another post.

Problems
There is one pretty annoying problem that's been haunting me. Vista, like XP, likes to check for new wireless networks every 60 seconds without fail. In XP it was possible to disable this and forget about it, but because the Vista drivers work differently it's not actually possible to do that. This means that every 60 seconds, on most wireless setups in Vista, a 2-3 second lag spike occurs. That's not good, and I'm hoping Microsoft will release a fix pretty soon.

- 12:00 AM - Whoa.

Shoutbox.

Fayte, get me on MSN or Gmail (ziggythehamster), and I'll set you up with credentials for the SVN server I'm running with the essence-engine code on it.

It's probably _very_ old code, and will probably need a lot of crap pasted on top. Also, at one point, I worked on adding theme support, but it never got finished... So. If you'd like to enlighten us with updated code, go ahead. Also, make sure files with passwords and other sensitive goodies aren't committed (or committed without sensitive goodies).

That is, if you want to use version control. EE is kind of an OSS project, so we should probably kind of provide code that's up to date.

- 6:04 PM - I don't usually do stuff like this, but...

This is the most awesome video you will ever see.

- 9:38 PM - DST patches, a little late

For anyone who needs them, unofficial Daylight Savings Time patches for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP.

Other people doing Microsoft's job for them. Typical.

- 1:08 AM - Does it count as two days late...

...if I post it while I'm still awake from when it was only one day late?

I submit to you that it does not.

Anyways, here goes...

Happy Birthday eXonyte!

- 6:46 AM - The Lord of the Ajax: Return of the Shoutbox

That box there on the right is an Ajax-powered shoutbox which all users can now use.

Features:
- checks for new shouts every 15 seconds
- your shouts are added in real time with no reloading (try it!)
- you can delete messages by dragging them to the bin (or "Trash Can" for you Americans) note: the bin will only appear once you start dragging a shout
- browse pages seamlessly
- no annoying "page reload" clicking noise every time it refreshes
- it's now 500% easier to spam the site

It should be fully working in Firefox and IE, but currently only JavaScript-enabled browsers will be able to post messages. (This has now been fixed - if JavaScript is disabled, it will fall back to regular POST requests.) I'll also be adding inline editing. Oh, and it doesn't look too great on the Calm Blue theme right now.

I have some more interesting stuff I'm going to add to the site over the next few weeks.

Hint: to delete your messages, drag the message to the bin (you'll see what I mean when you start dragging the message).

- 12:27 PM - Hot Fuzz is a brilliant film.

Summary: It's funny without overtly trying to be funny, but I don't think many Americans would appreciate the bucketfuls of English humour. It is an awesome film though, and I'm pretty glad I saw it. Is it even out in America, I don't know...

Also, if any of you who still check up here play CSS, post your Steam name and we can organise a game, since I have an unused CSS server at the moment.

- 1:10 AM - New Wii channel quietly released

If you check the Wii Ware section in the Wii Shop Channel, you'll see they've added a channel called "Everybody Votes Channel".

It's a small, free download, so I tried it out. For people who like useless statistics like I do, it will be great. Basically, simple poll questions will show up from time to time. You can cast your vote, and you have the option of predicting what you think will be more popular. After the poll ends, you will be able to see the results, and it will keep track of your prediction record.

I expect my Wii will be glowing some time in the morning, but we'll see.

- 11:43 PM - When the bloody hell did THIS happen?

Ziggy's image

I didn't hear about it, so I assume it's recent, but the dates on MySpace are off. Substantially. So maybe it happened a while ago. In any event, it sucks balls.

My 98 Nissan Altima, aside from crappy paint and scratches, is fine.

(for those unaware [or maybe who can't see the image due to EmoSpace sucking], that's eXonyte's car)

- 5:26 PM - Posting from my Wii

Needs better controls and tabs. Oh and in-game browsing for when I get stuck on Zelda.

- 6:15 AM - Women dies after a "Hold your wee for a Wii" radio contest

"A preliminary autopsy states that a woman died of "water intoxication" following a water drinking contest for a Nintendo Wii. News10 in Sacramento reports Station 107.9 The End's "Hold your wee for a Wii" contest had contestants doing exactly what the title says. The winner was the person who didn't release their bladder the longest."

Good lord.

Brainiac: Alkali Metals

Sure, this is old news to some, but it's still inspiring to watch.

- 6:39 AM - I never thought I'd do it

I just bought and paid for a Wii off eBay. Before you yell at me, it's a Wii + Rayman + Red Steel package for £200 which includes postage. The RRP for that is £250 so I figured it's a pretty good deal. And it's paid for on PayPal too so if it goes wrong I can get my money back. Yay!

For those interested the item is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230074774223, there are some left if you want one.

Update: *gulp* eBay have removed the listing due to concerns over an unauthorized account access. I'll wait the 20 days maximum delivery time...then raise hell. He's got over 200 orders so I don't think it will be too difficult getting my money back out of eBay/PayPal. We shall see. A big part of me still believes it's legit, just some little things (for example, it doesn't come with Wii Sports - why would a scammer say that?)

Update 2: I have e-mailed and asked him to get my Fedex tracking number immediately. This should be interesting, if he gives some half-assed excuse then it really is time to start worrying, eh?

Update 3: And eBay have put all his listings back up...
