- 1:26 PM - So, what do Wii think?
Most of you have already heard that the Nintendo system, previously code-named Revolution, is now officially known as the Nintendo Wii.
Personally, I think while it's very odd, the name can work. Obviously, from the four controller ports ever since N64 to how the WFC works, Nintendo is big on the "we" factor. Granted, as mentioned on many other sites, hardcore gamers are just going to give it a big "wtf". You have to wonder though if Nintendo only chose the name for the amount of press it's recieving as a result?

- 7:03 PM - Upload
I've been working on this for the past few hours. It shows you the upload status (time remaining, % done, etc) when uploading to a website. I've set up a little demo which saves all uploaded files into a repository on the server.
Check it out.
P.S. No, this does not work in IE. Get Firefox, or shut up.

- 4:17 PM - DropZip
I just wrote this little app, basically it allows you to extract stuff by dropping the zip/rar file on a Quick Launch icon. You can also zip stuff up by dropping a folder on the icon.
More info (including an animated gif to show you how it works) and download here: http://dump.pwnz.me.uk/dropzip
If you like it, please digg the story on digg.com: http://digg.com/software/DropZip_released

- 4:19 PM - I hate most security software.
Just a simple statement.
Software firewalls are so useless that they cause more problems than they solved. Get yourself a cheap router and learn to set it up right. You're a lot safer, with less hassle.
All of these things like Norton Internet Security are a waste of money and processor time. Internet Worm Protection? More false alarms than real ones. Referrer Blocking? Are you really that paranoid about people seeing where you're coming from? I bet you're afraid people will find out about your kiddy porn collection, that's what it is. Blocking cookies? Cookies are harmless and actually rather useful for a web developer! Anonymous proxies? If you have to hide behind your anonymity, chances are you shouldn't be doing whatever you're doing anyway.
To anyone running such software: Learn how to secure your computer and you won't need any of it, with the sole exception of Anti-Virus if you're running Windows. I haven't run anything but anti-virus for the past 3+ years, and you know how many problems I've had? Only one. An official Windows Update corrupted my registry. Even security software won't help you there buddy. Only a registry backup will keep you safe if that happens. I've never had a virus, I've never been hit by driveby spyware or adware, I've never had my computer hacked. Apparently, I'm doing something right.
The preceeding rant was brought to you by the constant stream of Bugzilla reports because of software firewalls blocking some poor sap's browser after an update.

- 12:36 AM - Fire. Hot.
Tip of the Day: Do not use 3V LEDs in a 5V power rail. Ever. They spontaneously combust.
..details, you say? Well. My friend's CPU heatsink has got some nifty mounting thingies for a scoop that is an accessory he doesn't have. Well, it just so happens to also be able to hold a LED. So, I use my electronics skill of 159 to rig up four LEDs (blue) with the intention of running them off of 5VDC. Well, I had a 3V watch battery to test with, and it was wired perfectly before we mounted the processor. We plugged it into his 5V rail. I thought these were 5V LEDs, but going back through my Gmail, they were actually 3VDC... Anyways. Every LED, in succession, changed colors from a really pretty, blinding blue, to a yellow milky color, to a red color, to a flame (and I'm proud of my LEDs, because they lasted about 5 seconds before they caught fire. we were seriously proud at how fucking cool it looked...then it caught fire). Now, imagine the coolness of having flames around your processor. Yes, it looked cool. But, we had to unplug it because it's a very rare processor and expensive too. And fortunately, the only thing fucked up is his cheap fan controller.
Lesson? Label your LEDs. 5V go in one place and 3V go in another, and always make sure you read the Engrish product description before you make assumptions on either.

- 2:56 PM - 0mg, l337 h4x0rz? Hardly...
Today is officially renamed "eXonyte's Realm flashy-flashy seizure day".
Update: this doesn't work very well in Internet Explorer (the animated GIFs for some reason, don't animate). Switch to Firefox to see it in its full... glory.
This post will be removed at the end of the day, never to be seen again...
Second update: if you missed today's, shall we say, special effects, then you'll get another chance on April 17th, 2007! (Someone remind me nearer the time...)
Third update: apparantly, no you won't.

- 12:10 AM - This is why I like Wikipedia
I've been reading about Sonic the Hedgehog for the past few hours and I stumbled across an interesting article.
Sounds like a good theory to me.
April 12, 2006
Well it seems that everyone is too lazy to post anything, so i tought i'd post a link to a good webcomic: UserFriendly
And say that i met someone from here while playing cs the other day, can't remember who it was though but they reminded me that eXonyte's realm still exists :)
Edit: And i just realized that i still do not have a user image so i might have to get around to making one :P

- 1:13 AM - "Doh!" moment of the day.
I just realized that I bought a CD yesterday that I had already bought as an online download a week or two ago.
Ah well, at least it's a good CD.

- 7:33 AM - April Fool's Day: A Guide for Webmasters
Do you own a website? Well in that case, you need this guide for April Fool's Day!
In a few simple steps, you'll learn how to:
- turn your website pink
- make users think you're being incorporated into Google
- spend hours setting up fake websites that aren't even funny and/or believable
- spend hours creating a fake race in a game when you could be spending time doing something useful and/or interesting for the players of said game.
I just don't think people get the whole "April Fool's Day" thing any more. It's sad, really. In Blizzard's case, it was 100% lame. Why not just do something like, I don't know, make the loading bar go backwards, put a few dodgy characters in-game? Shame they wasted hours producing a set of fake graphics when they could've been doing something useful. And it wasn't even funny.

- 11:48 PM - Disclaimer.
Do not read any of the following unless you are a geek. Failure to adhere to this notice will be punished.
Though this is utter and complete blasphemy, there are certain geeky things I have never done. At least until tonight.
Allow me to explain:
I've got my twelve sided die and I'm ready to roll with my wizard and my goblin crew. We're all going over to my mom's basement, bringing Funyuns and Mountain Dew. I got a big broadsword made out of cardboard, and the stereo's playing Zeppelin. It's the time of the night we turn on the blacklight, let the Dungeons and the Dragons begin... It's D&D.... fighting with the legends of yore. It's D&D.... never kissed a lady before.
Except the last line, the Funyuns, the cardboard broadsword, the backlight, and the basement (which can be replaced with yes I have, KFC biscuts, a bunch of logs for the outdoor stove, a boat spotlight, and my friend's back porch -- in that order), the previous just happened.
Apologies to Steven Lynch.
- 11:33 PM - Today might be the best day of your life.
Quote (Maddox)
For months I've given hints about the book I've been writing. Hints
such as the title, and what it's about. No more foreplay. I'm
going straight for the money shot with this next, and final book
update. For the first time in the history of the universe,
behold the cover of my book:
http://www.alphabetofmanliness.com
The release is still slated for June, but it's available for
pre-order on Amazon now (disregard the release date they have
listed, it's a damn lie):
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/080652720X/bpitu-20/103-1503073-4111803?%5Fencoding=UTF8&camp=1789&link%5Fcode=xm2
So how good is it really? Don't take my word for it:
http://www.alphabetofmanliness.com/?u=review
I'll post updates about any signings as the release gets closer,
however, please take note of the rules of conduct I've listed on
the "tour" page. Also, I may be having a contest to give away
necklace versions of my book so you can wear one around town.
I wear mine all the time and I've gotten 10% more sex because
of it.
For those who still care.
