Anyone here ever actually look in to the cost of an MP3 license?
I was looking in to some libraries for a program I was thinking about writing. Now, if I wrote this program chances are I would distribute it as well. Turns out that doing it legally would be absolutely insane for a hobbyist. No wonder the OGG activists push back against MP3 as hard as they do. Basically, as long as I distribute less than 5,000 copies I'm safe, but beyond that I'd be charged a minimum of $15,000 a year.
I suppose if I ever bother, I'll make sure to in no way link MP3 related code in to my project. It'll have to use codecs provided by the host operating system or nothing.
